AFRICAN UTILITY WEEK 2012 WATER HACKATHON

Request for your participation

The African Utility Week will be hosting a Water Hackathon – a competition at which South Africa’s best IT talent will compete to solve your utility’s water related challenges with innovative new software and technology.

At a previous Hackathon in Nairobi, cutting-edge solutions to challenges submitted by utilities, regulators, academics and private individuals included the following examples:

Supported by:

world bank
water hackathon

Example 1: A new mobile-to-web customer feedback system
The Kenyan water sector lacked a best-practice customer feedback system. In only two days, the Hackathon yielded a prototype allowing complaints to be submitted by text-message. The system gives customers a new way to provide feedback, and the national regulator an innovative tool to keep track of regional utilities’ performance. With support from the World Bank, the prototype is now under further development for a national roll-out.

Example 2: A water quality map for Nairobi Water Utility
Each month Nairobi Water Utility tests 500 water samples at over 300 locations, but this water quality data has not been available to the public. During the Hackathon, a team of young developers created a digital online map that would allow the public easy access to the data.

As these examples show, the African Utility Week Water Hackathon will be a unique opportunity to have young IT talent solve challenges affecting your organization or area of responsibility.

Now is your opportunity to submit sector-related challenges to the Hackathon or contact us for more information:
