Lessons from 5 years of Operations and Maintenance of Solar PV in South Africa
Speaker: Liam May, Operations and Maintenance Manager, SOLA Future Energy, South Africa
SOLA Future Energy has been active in the Commercial and Industrial rooftop solar PV market for more than 5 years. At the current time the company has built and operates close to 30MW in total of rooftop solar PV. This paper will focus on the critical experience and lessons learnt during the 5 years of performing Operations and Maintenance (O&M) on more than 40 solar PV plants. Using data gained over years at 5 minute intervals and experiences of operational case studies, the paper outlines the important role of O&M services in ensuring that solar plants operate correctly and remain financially viable. One item of interest has been the effect of cleaning solar panels on panel performance and quantifying this effect.
