What is Initiate!?

The Power and Energy industries are in constant need of new talent and new ideas to encourage the development of ‘out of the box’ strategies
and bring about change. Created for postgraduate Honours or Masters students who are about to complete their degree and ready to work in the industry,
the Initiate! Impact Challenge is a 3-day inter-varsity competition hosted at the prestigious African Utility Week and POWERGEN Africa annual conference.

Selected participants will have the opportunity to share their ideas while networking with their peers, work with other utility professionals to put
their ideas into practice and gain maximum exposure within a pool of the top power, energy and water decision-makers. Initiate! is your chance
to learn about career possibilities in the power and energy sector and to use your imagination to power up your community and your country.

  1. LEARN! This is the perfect opportunity to build your portfolio of projects and effectively use what you have been learning at university in an applied setting where you have a time limit to get something working
  2. EXPOSURE! This free pass to African Utility Week will allow you to connect with the policymakers, thought leaders, utility giants, corporates and vendors and to receive enormous exposure to potential employers
  3. FUN! Get to flex your creative muscles and learn new skills while being surrounded with interesting people and engaging in fun activities. Plus, this will be an extra element to beef up your resume.


  • You are a post-graduate student
  • You are currently completing a degree in the areas of engineering, business management (specialising in Strategy and Innovation), energy studies, sustainable development or IT
  • You are enrolled at one of the following universities: Stellenbosch University, University of Cape Town, University of the Witwatersrand, Strathmore University
  • You are passionate about innovation, the energy transition and smart energy solutions
  • You are able to thrive in a diverse team setting
  • You are capable of working under time pressure


Please note: If your profile matches the requirements listed above, you will be required to submit a 250 to 500 word abstract to motivate your application to the challenge. Download and submit the abstract template on below.
